Spires Fall in Doubleheader Sweep to Kansas Wesleyan
LEAVENWORTH, KAN. - The Saint Mary baseball team faced a tough challenge at home this weekend, as they were swept in a doubleheader by Kansas Wesleyan. The visiting Coyotes proved to be a formidable opponent, taking both games with a 10-0 victory in the opener and a 9-1 win in the afternoon contest.
Game 1: Coyotes Pitching Shuts Down Spires in 10-0 Loss
In the first game of the day, the Spires struggled to generate offense against Kansas Wesleyan's Brett Maddock, who pitched a complete-game shutout. Maddock allowed just five hits and struck out four, keeping the Saint Mary bats quiet throughout the contest.
Kansas Wesleyan, on the other hand, got their offense going early and often. They scored a run in the first inning and continued to add runs in nearly every frame, ultimately tallying ten runs on thirteen hits. Tyler Favretto led the charge for the Coyotes, driving in four runs with two doubles and a triple. Garrett Garfield also had a strong game, collecting two hits and two RBIs, while Blake Dale added two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.
For the Spires, Keaton Herron, Bryce Turner, Daniel Martinez, Kruz Wahwahsuck, and Maverick Rockers each managed a single hit. Alex Dilley took the loss for Saint Mary, allowing five runs on seven hits over 2.1 innings. Andrew Richardson, Jacob Rehkow, and Luke Folmsbee pitched in relief.
Game 2: Coyotes Complete Sweep with 9-1 Victory
The second game saw Kansas Wesleyan continue their offensive prowess, securing a 9-1 victory to complete the doubleheader sweep. The Coyotes scored five runs in the top of the second inning, capitalizing on an error and stringing together several hits to take an earlycommand.
They added two more runs in the third and two in the sixth, building a comfortable lead. Jacob Williamson and Tyler Favretto once again led the Kansas Wesleyan offense, each driving in two runs.
The Spires managed to get on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Caleb McClellan doubled home Keaton Herron. However, that would be the only run Saint Mary could muster.
Garrison Spoonts started on the mound for the Spires and took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. Andres Zarate, Samuel Yancey, and Jacob Castaneda pitched in relief for Saint Mary. McClellan had a double and an RBI for the Spires, while Eli Prine and Wahwahsuck also contributed doubles.
