
Spires Come Up Short To Southwestern
Leavenworth, KS- The University of Saint Mary baseball team looked to sweep Southwestern College Sunday afternoon, but came up just short falling 13-12.
Saint Mary is now 3-17 overall and 3-7 in the KCAC.
The Moundbuilders answered first, scoring five runs in the top of the first, 5-0. The Spires looked to answer back and scored one run in the bottom of the first thanks to a RBI single by Daniel Gonzales to score Alex Guevara, 5-1. The Spires kept chipping away and scored one run in the bottom of the second and third inning cutting the deficit by two, 5-3. Southwestern was able to answer back and scored a run in the top of the fourth to extend their lead, 6-3. The Spires were not discouraged however, and came up big with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, which included a double to deep right field by Jarett Goss to score Jacob Honadel, 7-6. The Spires with the lead looked to stop Southwestern but the Moundbuilders were able to collect four more runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead, 10-7. Southwestern followed their momentum from last inning to extend their lead with three more runs in the top of the seventh, 13-7.
The Spires looked for a comeback and were able to answer back with four more runs in the bottom of the seventh ignited by a two run homerun by Myles Thompson, 13-11. The Spires were able to rally in one run in the bottom of the ninth but the rally stalled as the team fell just short, 13-12.
Thompson led the team with three hits. He along with Antonio Valentin and Peyton Garvin each had two RBI.
