
Spires Split Against Sterling
Sterling, Kan. - The University of Saint Mary baseball team split with Sterling College, 12-7 and 5-3 today on the road.
Saint Mary is now 4-25 overall and 4-16 in the KCAC.
The Warriors were able to add two run in the bottom of the first to get things started, 2-0. The Warriors were able to feed off their last inning to add another run in the bottom of the second and extended their lead, 3-0. The Spires looked to answer back offensively but struggled to get timely hits. The Warriors were able to add another run in the bottom of the fifth, 4-0. The Spires looked for a comeback and were able to chip away one run in the top of the sixth thanks to RBI double by Daniel Gonzales to score Steele Sadler, 4-1. The Warriors were able to answer back and added three more runs and extended their lead, 7-1. The Spires weren't discouraged and were able to have a big inning in the top of the eighth and cut the deficit by three, 7-4. The Warriors looked to close out the Spires in the top of the ninth but the Spires seemed to find a spark in the ninth and were able to add eight runs and took the lead, 12-7. The Spires were able to shutdown the Warriors in the bottom ninth to win, 12-7.
Peyton Gavin collected three hits and three RBIs and Jarrett Goss also collected three hits and two RBIs for the Spires.
In the second game the Spires were able to get things started with two runs thanks to an RBI single by Damian Lomeli to score Jacob Honadel, 2-0. The Spires looked to extend their lead in the top of the fifth and added one more run thanks to a squeeze by Francisco Villarreal to score Gonzales, 3-0. The Warriors answered back in the bottom of the fifth and scored two runs, 3-2. The Spires looked to close the game out but were unsuccessful in the bottom of the sixth and the Warriors were able to add three more runs and take the the win, 5-3.
Villarreal lead the offense with two hits and two RBIs.

Saint Mary is back in action Sunday to finish up their series with Sterling College at 3 pm.
