Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team hosted Dordt and William Penn on Saturday, resulting in a 4-2 win over Dordt and a 2-1 loss to the Statesmen. The Spires are now 5-3 overall on the year.
Game One
Andrew Richardson had another quality start to open the day for the Spires, giving up just two runs in six innings with three strikeouts. Richardson's only hiccup came in the top half of the second after a single drove in two runs for Dordt. Saint Mary responded promptly in the bottom of the third after an errant throw on a steal and a sacrifice fly from Bryce Turner tied the game at two.
The Spires drove in what would become the deciding runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Turner started things off with an RBI single to center field, and then Trevor Neely drove in another on an infield single. Jacob Castaneda came in to close the book on the Dordt Defenders after he turned a line-drive double play to end the game.
Game Two
Nicholas Salgado got the start in game two for the Spires, topping Richardson's performance by giving up zero runs and only allowing two hits. The lone run for Saint Mary came in the bottom of the third inning when Daniel Martinez drove in Jack Knutson on a single up the middle. Dominant pitching from Salgado kept the game close at 1-0 until the top half of the seventh inning. William Penn capitalized on errors from the Spires to make it a 2-1 ball game in their favor. In the bottom half of the inning, Saint Mary was retired in order and fell 2-1.
Up Next
Saint Mary will open conference play next weekend, hosting Oklahoma Wesleyan for a three-game series starting at 2 p.m. on Friday in Leavenworth, Kansas.
