Baseball Splits Saturday in Doubleheader Against Avila

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team hosted the Avila Eagles for a doubleheader on Saturday, winning game one 8-7 and losing game two 10-6. The Spires are now 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the KCAC. 

 

Game One

Nicholas Salgado started in game one, throwing six innings, giving up three runs on six hits, and striking out four batters. A two-run first inning gave Avila an early 2-0 lead. The Spires responded in the second inning, driving in two runs and taking a 3-2. Preston Gibson extended the lead by two in the fourth with a single to left field and in the sixth with a solo home run to make it a 5-3 ball game. The Eagles continued to match Saint Mary as they scored two more runs in the seventh and in the ninth to take a 7-5 lead. Jack Knutson had an RBI double in the bottom half of the ninth, and Brenden Roop followed with a walk that drove in a run to tie the game at seven. In the the bottom of the 11th, Eli Prine became the hero as he singled to left field, giving Saint Mary a walk-off 8-7 win.

 

Game Two

Daniel Martinez got the Spires going in game two, driving in Caleb McClellan with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. However, the Eagles responded with an eight-run top of the fourth to make the score 8-1 in favor of Avila. Two more runs in the fifth inning from Avila gave them a nine-run lead, with time running out for Saint Mary. The Spires were able to cut into the large Eagle lead, scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally died as Saint Mary fell 10-6.

Saint Mary will conclude its weekend series against the Avila Eagles at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Leavenworth, Kansas.
