Baseball Drops Series Opener to Graceland

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team hosted the Graceland Yellowjackets on Friday, resulting in an 11-9 loss. The Spires are now 9-9 overall on the year. 

 

Nicholas Salgado got the start on the mound for Saint Mary, holding the Yellowjackets to two runs on four hits with four strikeouts in three innings. After a two-run top of the second, the Spires posted runs in the bottom half of the second and third to tie the game at two. Graceland responded with two or more runs over the next three innings to take a 6-2 lead. Saint Mary had a big fifth inning, as the Yellowjackets walked in three runs, bringing the Spires within one run. However, in a five-run sixth inning, Graceland took a big 11-5 lead. 

 

Ben Cordova drove in two runs for Saint Mary in the sixth, chipping away at the daunting Graceland lead. An RBI sacrifice fly from Kruz Wahwahsuck drove in Eli Prine to come within three runs of the Yellowjackets. Justin Nunez hit an RBI single later in the inning to make the score 11-9 in favor of Graceland. The Spires were not able to catch up to GU and eventually fell.
