Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team hosted the Ottawa Braves on Saturday for a doubleheader to open their weekend series, resulting in a 7-6 win and a 4-1 win. The Spires are now 13-10 overall and 7-5 in conference.
Game One
Noah Parra started on the hill for Saint Mary, throwing seven innings and giving up three runs on ten hits with one strikeout. The Spires had a big third inning; Caleb McClellan opened the rally with an RBI triple to left field, Bryce Turner followed by driving in two runs with a single to right, and Elip Prine drove in two more runs with a single to right field. McClellan drove in another run in the fourth and scored on a single by Daniel Martinez to make it a 7-0 ball game. The Saint Mary pitching staff was able to hold off the Braves, as Jacob Castaneda earned his eighth save of the year, giving the Spires a 7-6 win.
Game Two
Andrew Richardson got the nod to start game two, throwing six innings and giving up one run on seven hits. Saint Mary continued to press offensively like in game one, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Eli Prine hit an RBI double down the right field line, driving in Martinez to make it a 2-0 game. Kruz Wahwahsuck finished the inning with an RBI single to center, giving the Spires a three-run lead. Ottawa got one run across in the fourth inning, but Richardson's strong performance on the mound helped Saint Mary hold on to their slim lead. Martinez added another run in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double down the left-field line to make the score 4-1. Castaneda took the mound in the seventh and closed the door on the Braves for his ninth save of the year, securing the 4-1 win over Ottawa.
