
Spires Sweep Baker on the Road, Earn Doubleheader Victory
Baldwin City, KS – The University of Saint Mary baseball team traveled to Baker Universitya nd emerged with a significant doubleheader sweep, taking both contests from the Wildcats. The Spires displayed strong pitching and timely hitting to secure the pair of victories.
Game 1: Spires Silence Wildcats in 3-0 Shutout
In the opening game, the Saint Mary pitching staff was dominant, holding the Baker offense scoreless in a 3-0 victory. Gabriel Olguin started on the mound for the Spires and delivered a stellar five innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six. John Berislavich came on in relief and closed out the final two innings, also surrendering just one hit and keeping the Wildcats off the board to earn the win (1-0).
Offensively, the game remained a tight 0-0 affair until the top of the seventh inning. Daniel Martinez sparked the rally with a single and advanced to second on an error. Pinch-runner Jack Knutson then scored the unearned go-ahead run. Jovani Reynoso provided insurance with a clutch single up the middle, driving in both Ian Maldonado and Martinez to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Spires tallied four hits in the contest, with Caleb McClellan and Lucas Barta each recording a hit. Reynoso's two RBIs proved to be the difference-makers in the shutout victory.
Game 2: Late Rally Secures 2-0 Victory for Saint Mary
The second game was another tight affair, with both teams locked in a scoreless battle for the majority of the contest. Robert Rosado pitched a gem for the Spires, going five strong innings, allowing four hits and striking out two to earn the win (1-3). Angel Nicoli-Colli came in for the save, pitching two scoreless innings and allowing just one hit while striking out one to secure his first save of the season.
The Saint Mary offense broke the stalemate in the top of the sixth inning. Keaton Herron reached base, and Maverick Rockers delivered a clutch single up the middle, driving in both Herron and pinch-runner Saul Vazquez-Alvarado to give the Spires a 2-0 lead.
The Spires managed just two hits in the second game, but Rockers' timely two-RBI single proved to be enough to secure the victory. The defense also played a key role, turning two double plays to stifle any potential Baker rallies.
