Spires Fall to Southwestern Despite Fourth Quarter Push

WINFIELD, KAN. - The University of Saint Mary Spires fell 69-28 on the road against Southwestern in a tough matchup. Southwestern took control early, building a 48-6 lead by halftime, with USM's first points coming from a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Cesar Vela late in the second quarter. The Spires converted 50% of their third downs and held nearly 10 minutes more possession than the Moundbuilders but struggled to keep pace early.

Cesar Vela threw for 134 yards, adding one touchdown and one interception. His passing touchdown, a 30-yard strike to Michael Gazzana, came late in the third quarter. Defensively, Hunter Hendricks and Brayden Arnold each contributed six tackles, but the unit faced a tough day as Southwestern quarterback Braden Howell posted six touchdowns and 379 passing yards. Despite the lopsided score, the Spires showed resilience with a late-game push in the final quarter to narrow the Moundbuilder lead.
