Men's Soccer Squeaks By Bethel Tuesday Night

LEAVENWORTH, KAN. – The University of Saint Mary men's soccer team squeaked by Bethel College Tuesday night at Berkel Memorial Stadium to open up conference play. The final score was 2-1.

The Spires are now 4-3 on the season, and 1-0 KCAC.

Saint Mary would get on the board quickly, after a goal was kicked in by Elijah Tombs put the Spires up 1-0. The defense was able to fend off the Threshers through the remainder of the first half and well into the second half.

Bethel would finally tie the game up 1-1 with 14:10 left to play in the game.

With just under 10 minutes left to play, Osvaldo Reyes kicked the ball in from the corner to find Cesar Gonzalez, who knocked it in with a header, giving the Spires a 2-1 lead. Saint Mary was able to hold off the Threshers the rest of the way, to secure the win in their conference opener.

Jose Martinez and Sabino Lozano both led the team with three shots. Saint Mary had 13 shots overall, with four on goal. Enrique Gonzales had three saves.

The Spires will hit the road on Sept. 28, to take on Sterling College in their second KCAC matchup of the season. The game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
