Stout Defense Solidifies 2-0 Win Against Southwestern

WINFIELD, KAN. - The University of Saint Mary men's soccer team came out victorious in a 2-0 win on the road against Southwestern College. The Spires' dominant second-half performance led them to their eighth win of the season, improving their conference record to 7-5.

After a scoreless first half, Saint Mary broke through in the 51st minute when Huib Siefkes found the net with an unassisted goal, giving the Spires a 1-0 lead. Later in the 71st minute, Oscar Sandoval doubled the lead with another unassisted strike, capitalizing on a defensive misstep by Southwestern.

Saint Mary's defense held strong throughout the match, limiting Southwestern to just 11 shots, with goalkeeper Angel Jacinto making five critical saves to maintain the clean sheet. The Spires recorded 17 shots and 10 corner kicks, continually pressing the Moundbuilders' defense. Southwestern's Isaac Hopkins received a red card in the 71st minute, giving the Spires an advantage in the final stretch.
