KANSAS CITY, MO. - The University of Saint Mary Spires men's soccer team delivered a dominant 5-1 victory over Avila University. The Spires set the tone early with Gustavo Freitas opening the scoring in the 8th minute. Daniel Castro doubled the lead in the 25th minute, followed by Isha Hughan just a minute later, making it 3-0 by halftime.
In the second half, Huib Siefkes extended the lead with a goal in the 55th minute, and Homero Gonzalez added another in the 57th minute, capping a sequence of back-to-back goals that kept the pressure on Avila. The Eagles managed a consolation goal in the 71st minute, but Saint Mary's 18 shots on goal reflected their overall control of the match. With this win, the Spires improve to 4-3-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.
