
Spires Sweep Doubleheader against Missouri Valley College
LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary Spires Softball program delivered a dominant performance at home, sweeping a doubleheader against Missouri Valley College. The Spires showcased strong pitching and timely hitting to secure two decisive victories, improving their overall record to 12-10.
In the first game, the Spires jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Brooke Gerling delivered a crucial RBI single, followed by a sacrifice fly from Desarae Chavez to put Saint Mary up 2-0. The Spires added another run in the second inning with an RBI sacrifice fly from Audrey Spellman. In the fourth inning, Jessica Strandlund tripled and scored on a Spellman single. Grace Rose pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only five hits and striking out three, leading the Spires to a 5-0 victory.
Offensively, the Spires were led by Spellman, who had two RBIs, and Strandlund, who had a double and a triple and an RBI. Gerling and Chavez also contributed with RBIs.
In the second game, the Spires continued their offensive surge, scoring two runs in the first inning. Gerling once again came through with a two-RBI single, bringing home Alexis McDaniel and Spellman. The Spires exploded for four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a three-RBI error that allowed McDaniel to reach first and clear the bases. Gianna Paape followed with an RBI double to extend the lead to 6-0. Desarae Chavez pitched another complete game, this time allowing seven hits but maintaining the shutout and striking out five.
McDaniel led the offense with three RBIs, while Gerling added two more. Paape and Strandlund each contributed with doubles.

With these victories, the Spires are now 12-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play. They will continue their conference schedule on Wednesday, March 19th, at 2:00 PM with a doubleheader against Avila University at home.
