Softball Fall in Doubleheader Against Friends University

 

Leavenworth, KS – The University of Saint Mary softball team hosted Friends University on Saturday, March 29th, for a doubleheader, but unfortunately fell short in both contests, with both games ending in a 5-2 score in favor of the visiting Falcons.

Game 1: Falcons Hold Off Lady Spires' Efforts in 5-2 Loss

In the opening game, the Lady Spires battled hard but ultimately couldn't overcome an early Friends University lead, falling by a score of 5-2.

Friends University capitalized in the top of the third inning, scoring three runs to take an early advantage. The Lady Spires responded in the bottom of the fourth when Grace Rose singled to right-center, driving in Alexis Hughes to cut the deficit to 3-1. However, Friends University added two more runs in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run. In the bottom of the seventh, Alexis McDaniel singled to drive in Audrey Spellman, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Falcons' lead.

Offensively, the Lady Spires tallied six hits. Alexis McDaniel led the way with two hits and an RBI, while Grace Rose also contributed two hits and an RBI. Audrey Spellman and Jessica Strandlund each added a hit for Saint Mary.

In the circle, Grace Rose took the loss, pitching six innings and allowing three earned runs while striking out three. Allie Cox pitched the final inning.

Game 2: Friends University Completes Sweep with Another 5-2 Victory

The second game of the doubleheader saw a similar outcome, with Friends University once again securing a 5-2 victory over the Lady Spires.

Friends University took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Lady Spires responded in the bottom of the third when Alexis McDaniel scored on an error, making it 2-1. Saint Mary tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Jessica Strandlund doubled to left-center, driving in Audrey Spellman. However, Friends University answered immediately in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs to regain the lead and ultimately secure the 5-2 victory.

Offensively, the Lady Spires recorded seven hits in the second game. Audrey Spellman and Gianna Paape each had two hits, while Alexis McDaniel, Jessica Strandlund (with an RBI double), and Megan Brinkman each added a hit.

Bianca Venegas took the loss in the circle, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing four earned runs. Desarae Chavez and Allie Cox also made appearances in relief.

With these two losses, the University of Saint Mary softball team's overall record moves to 15-17. They will look to bounce back as they host Bethel (KS) on Saturday, April 5th, at 1:00 PM CDT
