
Softball Sweeps Southwestern on the Road in Impressive Doubleheader
Winfield, KS - The University of Saint Mary softball team continued their winning streak in impressive fashion sweeping a road doubleheader against Southwestern College. The Spires showcased a potent offense and strong pitching, securing victories with scores of 6-3 in the first game and a resounding 18-0 shutout in the second.
Game 1: Spires Secure 6-3 Victory Over Southwestern
The Spires jumped out to an early lead in the opening game, scoring a run in the top of the first inning when Gianna Paape singled home Jessica Strandlund. Saint Mary added another run in the fourth when Grace Rose's sacrifice fly brought in Kate Robinette, who had entered as a pinch-runner.
Southwestern managed to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth, but the Spires responded immediately in the top of the sixth with a four-run outburst. Abigail Kudym delivered a clutch two-run triple, scoring Rose and Analesa Gonzalez, who had also pinch-ran. Brianna Camarena followed with an RBI groundout, bringing Kudym home. The final run of the inning scored on a double by Alexis McDaniel, driving in Audrey Spellman.
Southwestern added two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Spires' early lead proved to be enough. Desarae Chavez earned the win in the circle for Saint Mary, pitching five innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out six.
Offensively, the Spires were led by Kudym, who had a triple and two RBIs. Paape and McDaniel each added two hits and an RBI, while Rose and Camarena also contributed RBIs.
Game 2: Explosive Offense Leads to a Resounding 18-0 Shutout
The second game was a commanding display of offense by the Saint Mary Spires, as they exploded for 18 runs on 19 hits in a decisive shutout victory over Southwestern. The Spires scored early and often, putting up six runs in the top of the first inning and never looking back.
The offensive onslaught was led by Alexis McDaniel, who had a stellar game, hitting a home run and driving in four runs on four hits. Allie Cox also had a big game at the plate, collecting two doubles and four RBIs. Kate Robinette added two hits and two RBIs, while Siarra Quintero drove in three runs on three hits. Emily Jucht, Brianna Camarena, Jayden Hanna, and Analesa Gonzalez each contributed an RBI as well.
Bianca Venegas was dominant in the circle for the Spires, pitching a complete-game shutout and allowing just six hits while striking out three.

With this impressive road sweep, the Saint Mary Spires extend their winning streak to five games and improve their overall record to 19-17 and their conference record to 7-11. They will look to continue their strong play when they travel to Bethany College for another conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 12th. The first game is scheduled for 1:00 PM CDT.
