
Women's Basketball Falls To Southwestern Wednesday
LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary women's basketball team fell to Southwestern College Wednesday night inside Ryan Sports Center, despite a career night by Danielle Cassady. The final score was 62-53.
The Spires are now 2-13 overall and 2-9 KCAC.
Southwestern came out hot as they made four quick three-pointers to begin the game and led 12-2 before Nese Selepeo knocked down back-to-back three-pointers of her own. The Spires defense picked up the intensity and held Southwestern to just four points through the rest of the quarter and trailed 19-11.
In the opening seconds of the second quarter, Macy Walker found Dakota Corle in the paint for an easy bucket. On the next possession Cassady put the Spires within four as she scored her second basket of the game. Southwestern hit two free-throws, and Cassady answered with a three-point play as she drove through three defenders to the basket for a layup and got the foul. The Moundbuilders were able to get on a roll and led 33-21 at the half.
Walker hit the first basket to begin the second half, and Southwestern answered with a pair of free-throws. Cassady would score the next 10 points for Saint Mary as they trailed 44-33 going into the final quarter. The Spires would not fold as they fought back from a 15-point deficit. Midway through the fourth quarter, Rebecca Gilpin hit a three-pointer to get the Spires within six. Southwestern was able to pull away with free-throws to secure the win.
Cassady led the team in scoring with a career-high 25 points and had five steals. Selepeo and Corle each had eight points. Gilpin led the team with eight rebounds. As a team, Saint Mary forced 20 turnovers.
