Women's Basketball Falters To Peru State

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary women's basketball team stuck with Peru State early on, but a huge second quarter from the Bobcats led to them pulling away and defeating the Spires 93-49 at the Ryan Sports Center Monday night.

The Spires are 1-1 overall.

Peru State held a 21-15 after the first quarter over the Spires. Jerrica Johnson and Danielle Cassady catapulted Saint Mary by combining for all 15 points in the quarter. In the second quarter, the Bobcats gained the upperhand – going on a 16-0 run to start. The Spires were shutout until the 4:31 mark when Kaitlyn Fischer sank two free throws at the charity stripe. The Spires would trail 50-19 at the break.

Johnson, Macy Walker and Daspin Bruning would combine for the first 13 points of the third quarter for the Spires. Peru State however, would keep the hot shooting alive and led by double-digits the rest of the way, before ending the game with a 93-49 win.

Johnson led the game for the Spires with 12 points, while Cassady and Walker each had 11 points. Peru State shot 47.1 percent from the floor, while hitting 14-of-32 from three-point range. Saint Mary totaled a 26.0 percentage from the field.
