Spires Women's Tennis Falls to Nationally Ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary Spires women's tennis team faced a tough challenge on Tuesday, falling 5-2 to the No. 21 ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagles at home. Despite strong efforts, the Spires were unable to overcome the nationally recognized Eagles.

The day started with doubles play, where the Spires struggled to gain momentum. Shannon Finn and Tracy Llamas at #1 doubles and Rowen Wiemers and Mia Rojas at #2 doubles both fell to their opponents, with scores of 2-6 and 3-6 respectively. Courtney Standley and Monse Guerrero-Chapula managed to secure a decisive victory at #3 doubles, winning 6-0, providing a bright spot for the Spires.

Moving into singles, the Spires faced further challenges. Tracy Llamas battled fiercely at #1 singles, ultimately falling in a close tiebreaker (7-5, 2-6, [1-10]). Shannon Finn also fought hard at #2 singles, but was defeated in a tight match (4-6, 5-7). Mia Rojas and Monse Guerrero-Chapula also lost their respective matches at #3 and #4 singles. Rowen Wiemers managed to secure a hard-fought victory at #5 singles in a tiebreaker (6-4, 4-6, [10-6]). Courtney Standley won her match at #6 singles with scores of 6-1, 6-3.

The Spires move to 2-3 and will look to rebound in their next match. The team will travel to Friends University on Monday, March 10th.
