Women's Indoor Track & Field Win Second KCAC Championship in Program History

Omaha, Neb.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Indoor Track & Field team competed in the KCAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Monday and Tuesday, resulting in a first-place finish. This also marked the Spire's second consecutive conference championship and their second in program history. 

 

The Spires had three runners finish in the top ten of the 60m event. Gretchen Raney took second with a time of 7.65, and Samantha Colson ran a 7.95 and took sixth place. Her time in preliminary rounds was fast enough to reach the NAIA "A" standard. Raney also finished in second place in the 200m event, running a 25.72. Lexi Wardlow and Carissa Martin had top-ten finishes in the 400m event; Wardlow placed third by running a time of 58.92, hitting an NAIA "B" standard. Martin ran a 1:02.28 in the event, finishing in sixth place. 

 

Maddy Walter-Sherretts won two separate events, the 600 and 800 meters. She won the 600m by running a time of 1:37.91 and the 800m with a 2:19.84. In the one-mile event, the Spires took first through fourth place, with Reagan Hiebert coming in first, running a 5:12.64, and Kate Madsen finished in second with a time of 5:12.73. Riley Hiebert and Josie Tyrrell rounded out the top four finishers of the event for Saint Mary. Reagan Hiebert won her next two events, the 3000m and 5000m runs, completing the trifecta for first-place finishes in a day. 

 

Both the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams had podium finishes at the meet. The 4x400m team of Martin, Raney, Colson, and Wardlow came in third place with a time of 4:04.80. The 4x800 team comprised of Carly Holadia, Shannen Dorn, Carlie Gregg, and Walter-Sherretts team finished first place, running a 9:27.33 and hitting an NAIA "A" standard. 

 

Martin had a podium appearance in a field event as well. She took third place in the triple jump event, reaching a mark of 11.14 meters. 

 

All these performances and others helped Saint Mary win their second consecutive conference championship with a team score of 180.

The Spires will send multiple athletes to the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday, February 29, in Brookings, South Dakota.
