
Volleyball Has Strong Showing Against Spartans
Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Volleyball team took on the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans to start their two-game home tournament, resulting in a 3-0 win. The Spires are now 9-4 on the year.
Saint Mary scored early and often in the first set, going on a 7-1 run. Two errors created by the Spires cut the lead down to five. However, Rebecca Sprague's and Madison Folsom's kills helped generate momentum, resulting in a 17-3 lead. Hannibal-LaGrange called a timeout to stop the run. Hannibal-LaGrange started on a 2-0 run after the timeout, but the Spires answered with more offensive output. Kills by Devin Ford, Keagan Shockley, and Folsom helped the Spires win with a score of 25-10.
At the start of the second set, the Trojans were up 3-2, trying to get things going. Saint Mary went back and forth with the Trojans, then kills by Camryn Wessel, Sprague, and an ace from Macey Adams caused LaGrange to call a timeout with the set at 6-10. Saint Mary had found their momentum and tried to put this set away, but errors created by the Spires helped Hannibal-LaGrange bring the lead down to five (12-19). This run continued, and the Spires called a timeout with the score at 20-15. Errors by the Trojans and kills by Renata Dominguez and Rylee Kenitzer helped the Spires end the set at 25-16.
The third and final set saw more offensive pressure from the Spires. Saint Mary went on two big runs to extend the lead to 20-10. Two service aces from Ava Bojanski helped the Spires end this set 25-10. Ivory Howat and Courtney Standley combined for a total of 30 assists. Folsom ended the game with nine kills, while Shockley had eight.
