Spires Fall in Five Sets to Threshers

North Newton, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Volleyball team took on the Bethel Threshers on Saturday, resulting in a 3-2 loss. The Spires are now 17-8 overall and 5-4 in the KCAC.

The Spires and Threshers were neck and neck to open the first set as they headed into the middle of the set. The Spires built momentum as kills from Keagan Shockley, Rylee Kenitzer, and Madison Folsom started a 10-2 run for the Spires, making it 19-10. Threshers tried to make a run to get back into the set, but the unstoppable offense of the Spires gave them a 25-21 win in the first set.

In set two, the Threshers gained momentum as they went up 18-11 until the Spires had a spark in their offense and came back to tie it at 21. The Threshers came out of set two with a 25-21 victory.

Saint Mary came out in the third set trying to string together multiple points to take the lead, but they couldn't get the ball past the Thresher defense. Bethel took the third set with a final score of 25-20.

The Spires were red hot in the fourth set, as they came out of the gate with a 7-3 lead over the Threshers. Lockdown defense from the Spires and continued offensive pressure gave the Spires a 19-14 lead in set four and an eventual 25-17 win after Kenitzer made the final kill.

The fifth set was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams, with each team keeping it very close. However, the set resulted in a Spire loss, with the final score being 15-13.
