Women's Wrestling Hosts First Spire Classic Friday

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary women's wrestling team hosted the Spire Classic Friday night. This was the first tournament hosted in program history. Three Spires placed in the top three in their weight class.

Brianna Mancillas took first in the 109-pound weight class after she defeated Diana Leyva from York College and Alessia Cokeley from Ottawa University. Lauren Lopez went 0-3 on the night at the 123-pound weight class. At the 136-pound weight class, Allyssa Bettencourt finished third after going 2-2 on the night. She won by fall over Mya Faneitty from Waldorf University and by fall over Samantha Kuilan from Ottawa University. Bettencourt was defeated by Teya Villapando who competed unattached, and to Makyla Black from Waldorf University. Karyn Larkin finished in seventh place and Charlis Vega finished in sixth at 143-pound weight class.

Emilee Demann fell in her first two matches before picking things up and won her final three matches to finish in third place at the 155-pound weight class. Demann won by tech fall over Victoria Lyons from Waldorf, Maddie Oelllermann from Missouri Baptist, and Kassandra Castillo from Waldorf. Megan Dougherty finished in seventh place at the 170-pound weight class. At the 191-pound weight class, April Penn finished in third place after going 3-2. She took down Mahealani Ramirez from Missouri Valley College by fall, and won by injury default over Miranda Dornan from Ottawa University. In the third place match, she pinned Erryn Davis from Missouri Baptist.

Villapando finished in second place at the 136-pound weight class as she wrestled unattached in her first tournament of the year. She fell in her first match, but then won her final three matches by fall.

"Coming back from a bunch of injuries, the team returned with toughness" Coach Christy Powell said. "Being aggressive as every before. I'm so proud of their dedication and energy. Looking forward to the next competition already".

UP NEXT
The Spires return to action Feb. 14 where they will host the USM Tri Duals inside Ryan Sports Center. The first match is set for 6 p.m.
