Women's Wrestling Places 5th At KCAC Championships
OTAWA, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary women's wrestling team finished fifth at the KCAC Championships Saturday. Four Spires placed in the top four of their weight class. Megan Dougherty received the Champion of Character medal.
The Spires are 2-8 overall and 1-2 in the KCAC.
At the 109-pound weight class, Brianna Mancillas fell to Addie Mejia from Missouri Valley College in the third place match. Allyssa Bettencourt finished in third place at the 136-pound weight class.
Dougherty went 1-2 on the day at the 155-pound weight class. After falling to Mahealani Lewis from Midland University, she battled her teammate Emilee Demann in a hard fought match, and came up with the victory with the 22-16 decision. She had the chance for redemption over Lewis in the third place match, but came up short.
"Megan is always punctual and comes to practice with a positive attitude, and she is a great person to be around" coach Christy Powell said. "I have really enjoyed working with her and getting to know her, and she is a great figure for the younger girls on the team. She enjoys the sport and shows up ready to learn and get better. Megan has made great strides and has come a long way since October. Most people take years to get where she has gotten in just a few months. We are super proud of this girl. That is why Coach Kearney and I voted for her to receive the Champions of Character award".
April Penn also finished in fourth place, as she went 1-2 on the day at the 191-pound weight class. In her second match, she quickly took down Malasha Lokey from Missouri Valley College and pinned her just 0:33 seconds into the match.
