Spires Open 2023 Season With 10-9 Win Over Graceland

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team opened their season against Graceland University, winning a close 10-9 battle. The Spires are now 1-0 on the season.

Yanthony Navarro started on the bump for the Spires but got off to a rough start, giving up three runs in the opening inning. Saint Mary was able to chip away at the lead over the next five innings but also gave up two more runs, and heading into the sixth, the Spires were down 5-3. In the sixth, Saint Mary erupted with a five-run inning. Four of the five runs came from a two-run double by Caleb McClellan and a two-run single by Brendan Roop. Reliever Cale Fields was able to retire the side in order in the top of the seventh. In the bottom half of that inning, McClellan contributed to the lead again, this time with a two-run triple off of the wall giving Saint Mary a 10-6 lead. Jacob Castaneda came in to pitch in the eighth and ninth inning for the Spires. Castaneda gave up three runs but was able to close out the game for Saint Mary, giving them a 10-9. Jordan McClellan had an on-base percentage of 1.000, going three for three with a walk. He also has three RBIs and a run for Saint Mary.
