McClellan's Two-Run Homer Put Spires Past Eagles 6-4

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team hosted the Avila Eagles for a mid-week matchup on Tuesday, resulting in a 6-4 win. The Spires are now 7-9 overall and 2-2 in the KCAC.

Starter Garrison Spoonts held the Eagles scoreless in the top of the first, getting out of jam after giving up a single and a double with only one out. Saint Mary got on the board in the bottom half of the inning when Bryce Turner had an RBI single making it 1-0. Spoonts retired the side in order in the second inning but gave up three runs to Avila in the third, giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Jordan McClellan drove in a run with a double down the left-field line, bringing the Spires within one of the Eagles. Saint Mary evened the score at three after an RBI single from Noah Parra.

Avila got their fourth and final run of the day in the top of the seventh via a sacrifice fly, making the score 4-3. The Spires answered in the bottom half of the inning when McClellan hit a two-run home run to left-center, putting Saint Mary up by one run. Wyatt Lowry drove in one more run for USM via a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth, giving the Spires a much-needed insurance run heading into the top of the ninth. Jacob Castaneda closed the door on the Eagles and secured the 6-4 win. McClellan led the way offensively for the Spires, going two for four with three RBIs and a run scored.
