Spires Best Swedes 11-6 for Series Win

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team hosted Bethany College for a mid-week matchup on Tuesday, resulting in an 11-6 win. The Spires are now 14-11 overall and 8-6 in conference play. 

 

Nicholas Salgado started on the bump for Saint Mary, throwing five innings and allowing four runs on eight hits with a strikeout. The Spires had a massive bottom of the third, scoring ten runs and taking a commanding lead. Three of the ten runs in the inning came from bases-loaded walks, while Francisco Villareal and Daniel Martinez had singles that drove in two runs each in the third as well. Aidan Hartig had two RBIs in the bottom half of the third, one coming from a single and a ground out to the shortstop. 

 

Bethany posted three runs in the top of the fourth and another in the fifth to make it a 10-4 ball game. Sant Mary drove in their final run of the day thanks to another RBI single from Villareal to give the Spires a seven-run lead. The Swedes scored their last two runs in the top of the seventh; after that, Angel Nicoli-Colli came in to finish the game on the mound for Siant Mary to secure the 11-6 win and the series win.
