Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Builders

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team hosted Southwestern College on Saturday to conclude their weekend series, resulting in a 13-4 loss and a 5-4 win. The Spires are now 15-14 overall;l and 9-8 in conference play. 

 

Game One

Saint Mary opened the game with a four-run bottom of the first. Brendan Roop was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Saint Mary a 1-0 lead. A passed ball allowed Bryce Turner to score from third, and Kruz Wahwahsuck followed with a single to right field that drove in two more runs, giving the Spires a 4-0 lead. The Builders responded with a four-run top of the second inning, tying the game at four runs apiece. Southwestern went on to score nine more unanswered runs, winning game two of the series 13-4. 

 

Game Two

After giving up one run in the top of the first, the Spires had another four runs in the bottom half of the first. Turner and Aaron Osorio had RBI singles, along with an RBI double from Roop, making it a 4-1 ball game. The Builders cut into the Saint Mary lead in the top of the fourth with a run and tied the game in the fifth with two more runs, tying the game 4-4. John Berislavich finished the fifth and sixth innings in relief, giving up no runs and striking out two batters. In the top of the seventh, Jacob Castaneda held Southwestern scoreless heading into the bottom half of the inning. With runners on first and second, Roop drove in the game-winning run with a double down the right field line, giving Saint Mary the 5-4 win.

The Spires will travel to play game three of their mid-week series against Bethany College at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in Lindsborg, Kansas.
