Spires Win 12-4 Over the Swedes for Mid-Week Series Sweep

Lindsborg, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team traveled to conclude their mid-week series with Bethany College on Wednesday, resulting in a 12-4 win. The Spires are now 16-14 overall and 10-8 in conference play. 

 

Noah Parra got the start on the bump for Saint Mary, throwing three and two-thirds innings, giving up no runs on two hits with three strikeouts. Parra was given an early lead after a two-run top of the first for the Spires. Eli Prine got the first run across the plate for the Spires after taking advantage of an errant throw, and Kruz Wahwahsuck drove in Brendan Roop for a 2-0 lead over the Swedes. In the top of the third, Aidan Hartig and Roop had RBI singles; Hartig also scored on a wild pitch to put the Spires up by five runs. 

 

Angel Nicoli-Coli finished the fourth inning on the mound and pitched through the seventh inning, holding the Swedes scoreless. In the eighth inning, Daniel Martinez drove in a run on an RBI single to left field, and Roop followed with his second RBI of the day after a double down the left-field line to give Saint Mary a 9-0 lead. Bethany responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs on two hits to make it a five-run ball game. The Spires posted three more runs in the top of the ninth to give them a comfortable 12-4 lead over the Swedes. Garrison Spoonts came in to close the door on Bethany in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 12-4 win and the sweep.

Saint Mary will be on the road for a three-game weekend series against the Evangel Valor starting at 2 p.m. on Friday in Springfield, Missouri.
