Spires Drop Game One to Valor 13-2

Springfield, Mo.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team traveled to play the Evangel Valor on Friday to open their weekend series, resulting in a 13-2 loss. The Spires are now 16-15 overall and 10-9 in conference play.

 

Nicholas Salgado started on the mound for the Spires, pitching almost a complete game. In the top of the first inning, Saint Mary was able to get runners on and in scoring position but couldn't execute to drive in those runs. Evangel took the lead in the bottom of the first and was able to keep it throughout the game. Daniel Martinez led the Spires at the plate, going two for three on the day. Saint Mary had a late response to the Valor's offensive output, scoring one run in the top of the sixth inning and another run in the top of the seventh. However, USM fell short of the Valor, resulting in the 13-2 loss.

The Spires will conclude their series against Evangel with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday in Springfield, Missouri.
