Spires Drop Season Opener on the Road to Midland

Fremont, Neb- The University of Saint Mary football team opened their season against Midland University Saturday, losing 64-10.

Midland took an early lead in the first quarter, capitalizing on good field position and a Saint Mary turnover. The Spire offense began to move the ball down the field late in the first quarter and turned it into points, finishing the eight-play 55-yard drive with a field goal. Defensively the Spires held the Warriors to just one touchdown in the second quarter. The Saint Mary offense was kept out of the endzone and went into the half down 29-3.

The Spires gave up two quick touchdowns to open the second half, extending the Warrior's lead to 43-3. Both teams would trade off drives that ended with punts mid-way through the quarter. Late in the third quarter, Midland scored two more touchdowns, making it a 57-3 game heading into the fourth. With under five minutes to go in the game, the Spires put together an 89-yard drive. Shane Bishop hit Josh Walker for a 57-yard touchdown pass, making the final score 64-10. Jartavious Martin led the team in rushing with 35 yards on the day. Defensively, Garrett Carter led the team in total tackles with 11.
