Spires Drop to Kansas Wesleyan 39-13

Leavenworth, Kan.- The Spires took on the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes this weekend, resulting in a 13-39 loss. The Spires are now 1-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

The first quarter started with a Spires possession that resulted in a three-and-out that gave the Coyotes the ball at their 43-yard line. Kansas Wesleyan took advantage of the opportunity and scored on their first drive of the game to go up 7-0. The Coyotes scored again before the end of the first quarter to make the score 14-0.

The Spires opened the second quarter with a drive that resulted in a forced punt, turning the ball over to the Kansas Wesleyan, who went down and scored, taking a 21-0 lead. The following drive for Saint Mary ended in a safety after a botched punt that gave the Coyotes a 23-0 lead. Kansas Wesleyan's following drive resulted in another touchdown that would put them up 30-0. With less than five minutes to go in the half, a fumble recovery by Garrett Carter gave Saint Mary excellent field position.

Caleb Bigpond, Joe Boone, and Josh Walker all contributed to a drive that resulted in a two-yard touchdown run by Eric Covington that put the Spires on the board and made the score 30-6 heading into halftime.

The second half showed promise for Saint Mary as a forced fumble by Hennessey Thomas led to another Carter recovery, giving the Spires great field position. The Saint Mary drive stalled out, forcing them to punt. A defensive battle led to zero scoring until the end of the third quarter when a Saint Mary mistake led to another safety for the Coyotes.

Kansas Wesleyan scored another touchdown to start the 4th quarter to go up 39-6. Saint Mary put together one more impressive drive as Shane Bishop found Alejandro Loera over the middle resulting in a 44-yard touchdown. The clock would run out on the Spires as Kansas Wesleyan ran away with a 39-13 victory.
