Spires Earn Big Road Win

Ottawa, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Football team took on the Ottawa Braves this weekend, resulting in a 33-23 win. The Spires are now 2-4 overall and 2-3 in Conference play.

The first quarter started with a Spires possession that resulted in a two-yard rushing touchdown from Erick Covington to give them the early 6-0 lead. The rest of the quarter featured great defensive stands by the Braves and the Spires. The second quarter saw another rushing touchdown by Covington that made the score 12-0. Ottawa quickly responded after a long touchdown put the Braves on the board 12-7. A stalled drive by Saint Mary allowed Ottawa to go down and kick a field goal to make the score 12-10. With five minutes to go in the half, the Braves looked to take the lead on a long pass play, but Keylin Hodge forced a fumble through the end zone that gave the ball back to Saint Mary. The Spires capitalized with another rushing touchdown by Covington to give the Spires a 19-10 lead heading into halftime.

Both offenses had stalled drives to begin the second half until Hennessey Thomas recovered a fumble and ran it back, giving the Spires a 26-10 lead. The rest of the quarter had more great defense as each team was held scoreless. Ottawa started the fourth quarter with a touchdown to cut the Spire's lead to 26-16. Saint Mary was forced to punt on the following possession. The Spire's defense held strong again as Kevin Orange forced a fumble that was recovered in the end zone by Thomas, making the score 33-16. That looked to be all the Spires needed as one more late score by Ottawa made the final score 33-23.

Covington, Caleb Bigpond, and Jartavious Martin all combined for 244 yards rushing today as Thomas led the way on defense with ten total tackles, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries for two touchdowns. The defense forced five turnovers, with Jaxon Curtis, Garrett Carter, Hodge, and Thomas all contributing.
