Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Football team hosted Southwestern for a Saturday night matchup, resulting in a 36-20 loss. The Spires are now 2-4 on the year and 2-4 in conference play.

Each team held strong on defense to open the game, with both opening drives getting stalled. The Builders scored with six minutes left in the first quarter on a nine-yard run to get on the board first.

Southwestern continued to build on their momentum and lead in the second quarter by scoring three more unanswered touchdowns, making the score 27-0 at halftime.

Southwestern drove 50 yards in almost four minutes, resulting in a field goal after halftime. Saint Mary got on to the board midway through the third quarter with a 22-yard pass from Erick Covington to Alejandro Martinez-Loera. Driving the ball 72 yards down the field led to a 9-yard touchdown run by Jartavious Martin to make it 30-13 going into the fourth.

The Spire defense again put together another defensive stop, which led to their final touchdown of the night. Covington ran the ball in himself for a 2-yard touchdown, making the game 30-20. The Builders responded with a 14-yard pass, but the Spires blocked the PAT attempt to make the final score 36-20. Covington threw for 231 on the night, while Jartavious Martin rushed for 126 yards.
