Martin Has Another 3 TD Performance in Win Over Tabor

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Football team hosted Tabor College on Saturday, resulting in a 40-31 win. The Spires are now 3-7 overall on the year and 1-3 in the Bissell division.

 

Saint Mary set the tone early, driving down the field on their first possession and ending with a 15-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead. The Blue Jays answered with a touchdown drive of their own to tie things up. Martin ran in another touchdown for the Spire's second straight scoring drive to go up 14-7. After a Tabor field goal, quarterback Erick Covington hit Alejandro Martinez-Loera for a 16-yard touchdown to take a 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. 

 

The Saint Mary defense produced another stop to open the second quarter, forcing the Blue Jays to punt. The complimentary football continued, with another touchdown from Martin to extend the USM lead to 18. Tabor got back into the game in the ensuing drive, scorning a touchdown to make the score 28-17. Each team traded punts to end the first half, with Saint Mary holding onto an 11-point lead. 

 

Saint Mary got on the board first in the third quarter after a one-yard touchdown run from Covington to make it a 34-17 ball game. The Blue Jays scored again to stay within striking distance on the following drive. Josh Bingham kicked a 17-yard field goal to open the fourth quarter, giving the Spires a 37-24 lead. Tabor drove down the field to cut into the Saint Mary lead again, scoring on a five-yard touchdown run to make the score 37-31. Saint Mary iced the game with another field goal from Josh Bingham to secure the 40-31 win over the Blue Jays. 

 

Covington threw from over 300 yards with a touchdown, while Martin led the offense in rushing with 168 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Jaxon Curtis had seven tackles, with a tackle for loss and a pass breakup.
