Flag Football Gets Home Win Over Cottey

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Flag Football team hosted Cottey College on Wednesday, resulting in a 33-15 win over the Comets. This marked the Spire's first win at home and in conference play, making their record 1-6.

Saint Mary took an early lead, scoring two unanswered touchdowns in the first half. The Spires made it 6-0 in the first quarter after Cheyenne Brooks hit Rebecca Ruck for a 20-yard touchdown. Later in the second, Brooks found Sade Ervin from 25 yards out for another touchdown to give Saint Mary a 14-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Spires took the opening third-quarter drive all the way down the field for their third touchdown of the day to make it a 20-0 ball game. Cottey responded with a touchdown of their own to come within two scores of Saint Mary. However, Brooks found the endzone for a 12-yard rushing touchdown on the ensuing drive to keep the Comets at bay. Mid-way through the fourth quarter, the Spires began to drive again. This time, Saint Mary utilized Elle Campbell in the upback position to keep Cottey on their heels to continue to eat the clock and move the ball down the field. Trinity Scott caught the final touchdown pass from Brooks to make the final 33-14. Brooks finished the day with 237 passing yards, four touchdown passes, and a rushing touchdown, combining for a career-high five touchdowns in a single game.
