Spires Can't Hold On and Drop to Swedes 78-68

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Spires hosted the Bethany Swedes Thursday, resulting in a 78-68 loss. The Spires are now 4-7 overall and 0-5 in the KCAC.

Joey Schultz scored the first seven points for Saint Mary a dunk gave the Spires a 7-0 lead. The Swedes began to score as well, but a three from Quinten Williams tied things up at 13-13 just five minutes into the game. Just after the midway point of the half, Saint Mary went on an 11-2 scoring run and took a nine-point lead. Bethany again responded, but a three from Cam Southern gave the Spires a 40-32 lead heading into halftime.

Joe Burgos and Braylen Duncan opened the second half with jump shots to extend the Saint Mary lead to 12. The Swedes then went on a long scoring run of their own, and after a three, Bethany had erased the Spire's 12-point lead with the score being 50-48 in favor of Saint Mary. Things went back and forth for the next six minutes, and after a free throw by Southern, Saint Mary clung to a 60-58 lead. The Swedes had one final scoring run in the last three minutes of the game that flipped the score, building a comfortable ten-point lead to finish the game 78-68. Southern led the Spires with 18 on the night, while Schultz was close behind with 15 points and nine rebounds on the night.
