Spires Come Close But Fall to Pride 9-6

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Lacrosse team hosted the Clarke Pride on Tuesday night, resulting in a 9-6 loss. The Spires are now 0-4 overall on the season.

Saint Mary took an early lead just two minutes into the contest after a goal from Patrick Jones. The Pride answered with a goal of their own four minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. Garrett Carter gave the Spires one goal lead with a man advantage with seven minutes to go in the first quarter. Clarke scored two more goals to go up 3-2 as the opening quarter came to a close.

The Spires opened the second quarter with another goal from Carter, and shortly after that, Cody O'Connell scored to retake the lead at 4-3. The Pride answered and continued to press on offense, scoring back-to-back goals just two minutes apart. Saint Mary was unable to score again before the half and headed into the locker room down 5-4.

The defensive play for both teams shined in the third quarter, with both teams being held scoreless after ten minutes. Clarke broke the stalemate with just over four minutes left to give the Pride a two-goal lead. Saint Mary responded with another goal from O'Connell to bring the Spires back within one point of Clarke.

Down one goal and heading into the final quarter, Saint Mary seemed to hold all the momentum. They used that to get one more ball past the Pride goalie to tie the game up at six a piece. However, Clarke came out victorious after scoring three unanswered goals to seal a 9-6 victory over the Spires. Carter led the Spires in goals with two on the night, while Carter Hale had three assists for Saint Mary.
