Men's Soccer Opens Season With 3-1 Win Over Doane

Leavenworth, Kan.- The men's soccer team held their season and home opener Saturday against the Doane University Tigers and held on to win 3-1.

The early part of the first half was slow, as both teams had multiple scoring chances, but nothing came from the pressure. Then, Saint Mary took the lead midway through the half after Gustavo Freitas scored off of a rebound to give the Spires a 1-0 lead. The attack from Saint Mary continued throughout the first half, and with five minutes to go, Santana Castro scored the Spire's second goal. Saint Mary entered halftime with a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, the Spires would go on the defensive to hold off the tigers and close out the game. Doane scored with 15 minutes left in the game, forcing the Spires back onto the attack to score another insurance goal. That goal came with two minutes left in the game as Freitas netted his second goal of the game, securing the 3-1 win for the Spires. Come Grieu helped led the Spires to victory with eight saves on the day.
