Spires Win Big Over Kansas Christian 5-0

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Soccer team played Kansas Christian College at home Saturday afternoon, winning 5-0. The Spire's overall record is now 3-1-1, heading into Wednesday's matchup at Manhattan Christian College.

After a competitive first thirty minutes, the Spires heated up and never looked back as Guilherme Caldas gave Saint Mary the 1-0 lead. The Spires kept up the offensive pressure as William Lopez put them up 2-0 with a goal of his own right before halftime. Saint Mary created many scoring opportunities throughout the entire first half, keeping possession and the Falcons on their heels.

The Spires came out of halftime poised to score again, with multiple shots being taken by Caldas and Jose Nava. Twenty minutes into the period, Alvaro Mercado assisted Paul Trejo for a goal that put the Spires ahead 3-0, keeping the trend from the previous half. Two minutes later, Gustavo Freitas got a goal of his own, putting the Spires up 4-0. With just under fifteen minutes to go, Trejo found Lopez for his second goal of the day, propelling the Spires to a 5-0 lead. The Falcons had little to work with as the Spires scrappy defense frustrated them all day, as they were held scoreless.

Saint Mary finished with 31 total shots to the Falcon's 3. Caldas and Anthony Rangel accounted for almost half of the team's shots on the night. A very impressive match for the Spires, cruising from start to finish.
