Men's Soccer Opens KCAC Play With 2-1 Win Over Southwestern

Winfield, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Soccer team came back against Southwestern College, winning 2-1 to open KCAC play. The Spires are now 4-1-1 and 1-0 in the conference heading into the mid-week matchup against McPherson College.

The first started fast, as Southwestern got on the board first, scoring in the first five minutes of the contest, going up 1-0. Ten minutes later, the Spires got their first goal of the day when Paul Trejo took advantage of a penalty kick that was given to Saint Mary. As the first period was winding down, the Spires pressed the Builders for one final push in the half, and Guilherme Caldas scored, putting Saint Mary up 2-1.

In the second period, the Spire continued the offensive pressure from the first half and nearly made it 3-1 after a shot from Kolby Shuck. The Southwestern attack became desperate as the period continued, but goalie Come Grieu made save after save to protect the Saint Mary lead. Keeping the Builders out of the Spires half of the field, Caldas had one more shot with under ten minutes to go, but the shot was saved. Trejo led the team on offense with a goal, an assist, and two shots on goal.
