Rangel's Goal Forces Tie With Evangel

Leavenworth, Kan.– The University of Saint Mary Men's Soccer team took on the Evangel Valor on Wednesday, resulting in a 1-1 draw. The Spires overall record is now 3-5-4 and 2-3-2 in the KCAC.

Saint Mary rattled off multiple shots early in the first half as Romario Harding and Guilherme Caldas missed wide right, and Abdul Omar had shots blocked. Caldas had an excellent look in the 22nd minute, but Evangel's goalkeeper came up big for the save.

Four minutes later, the Valor found themselves up 1-0 after a quick goal caught the Spires off guard. As the half continued, Anthony Rangel found the back of the net off the assist from Omar to tie things up, 1-1. Back-to-back offside calls before halftime stripped the Spires of their opportunity to take the lead.

Both teams traded shots back and forth to begin the second half, leading to a corner kick by Oscar Sandoval, and the scoring attempt failed. However, the Valor's defense remained grounded. Strong defensive play by both teams eventually closed out the game. Elvin Lara had an opportunity to put the Spires up in the 84th minute, but his shot flew wide right. Alec Scharff recorded two saves for the Spires.
