Swimming Has Record Outing At First Annual Sunflower Showdown

TOPEKA, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary men's and women's swimming teams had a record breaking day in the first Sunflower Showdown at the Hummer Sports Complex Friday. There were four school records set by the Spires.

Coach Bresser said "Great swims from the Spires across the team. It's great to see these performances so early in the season and especially with the types of workouts in recent weeks".

Megan Dailey broke the record in the 200 Freestyle with final time of 2:14:53 as she finished in 15th place.

Kadee Schutt had a great day in the water as she set two individual records in the 50 Free and the 100 Free. She finished in eighth place in the 50 Free with a time of 25.39 which was enough to qualify her for the national championships. She then finished in fifth place with a time of 58.03 in the 100.

In relays on the women's side, the Spires set a school record in the 200 Free Relay to qualify for nationals with a final time of 1:51.32.

On the men's side, Tevin Covington broke the school record in the 100 backstroke as he finished in fourth place with a time of 1:02.09.

Coach Bresser said "We look like a team. It's nice to look across the deck and see a large group who support each other and look sharp. I really like the depth we have for relays. As we grow it's good to see the competition among the team for those top relay spots. We have 4 relays qualified for Nationals but we're still shooting to get times in all 10 relays…3 more to go for men and women".

Both swimming teams will travel to Fremont, Neb. to take on Midland University on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.
