Men's Wrestling Goes 2-1 at Spire Duals

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary hosted Missouri Valley, Northwestern, Jamestown, Oklahoma Wesleyan, and Ottawa University for the Spire Duals on Saturday, going 2-1.

 

Saint Mary 35 Jamestown 14

Brody's Gee got things going for the Spires in the day's first dual against the Jamestown Jimmies. Gee beat his opponent via tech fall in the tongued period. After a loss in the 133 weight class, Freddy Barajas gave Saint Mary six more points, winning by fall in the 141 class. The Spires took a commanding lead in the dual with wins from Austin Almaguer, Josey Jernegan, and Braden Headington. Another win due to a vacant 174 class from Jamestown made the score 29-5. Ryker Blackburn finished the dual string for the Spires, winning by fall in the first period. 

 

Saint Mary 30 Northwestern 21

Gee got Saint Mary on the board again in the 125 class with another win by fall right before the end of the first period. The Spires rattled off four consecutive wins coming from Hartwell Taylor, Almaguer Jernegan, and Headington. Blackburn got his second win of the day, beating his opponent by fall in the 197 class. 

 

Saint Mary 24 Missouri Valley 27

The Spires took an early lead after Gee secured his third win of the day and his second pin. Taylor got the Spire's second win of the dual in the 141 class to make the score 10-4. A win by tech fall in the 149 class put Missouri Valley down by one heading into the 157 match. Jernegan responded by beating his opponent by tech fall to give Saint Mary a six-point lead. Headington added to the growing Spire lead with a win by decision in the 164 match. The Vikings answered 12 unanswered points with two straight wins by fall. Blackburn won his third match of the day, winning all by fall. A forfeit in the 285 weight class was the deciding factor in the 27-24 loss for Saint Mary.
