Spires Open Season With Sweep Over KCC

Leavenworth, Kan.– The University of Saint Mary Softball team played a doubleheader against Kansas Christian College, winning 10-2 in the first game and 11-2 in the second game. The Spire's overall record is now 2-0.

Game One

The game started with Saint Mary jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead as Audrey Spellman tripled to right center scoring Jessica Strandlund. Kansas Christian fought back and put up runs of their own in the second and third innings. The Spires answered in the fifth inning as Natalie Bruce doubled to left field, scoring Allyson Dias and tying the game at two runs a piece. A few batters later, Delaney Hess hit a double that scored two on the play making it 7-2 in favor of Saint Mary. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Victoria Gutierrez hits a double into left center, scoring Sadie McWilliams for the winning run. Gutierrez led the team on offense, going two for four with two doubles, a run, and two RBIs in the game.

Game Two

In game two, Kansas Christian scored first but did not have the lead for long as Saint Mary tied the game in the bottom half of the first after a sacrifice fly by Megan Brinkman that scored Bruce. The Spires kept the bats hot as Spellman flew out to right field, scoring Abigail Kudym. The Falcons responded in the third inning with an RBI single. The Spires answered again, scoring two in the bottom of the third and one in the bottom of the fourth, making the score 5-2. In the fifth inning, Saint Mary took advantage of errors and were able to score five runs, four unearned, leading them to an 11-2 win. McWilliams went two for three with two triples, two RBIs, and a run scored in game two.

The Spires will be at home for a weekend series against Evangel University at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Leavenworth, Kansas.
