Softball Drops Both Games in Weekend Doubleheader

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team played a doubleheader against Evangel University, losing 10-0 in the first game and 5-1 in the second game. The Spire's overall record is now 2-2.

Game One

After a slow start for both teams, Evangel eventually scored on an RBI single in the third inning that gave them a 1-0 lead. They followed that with a two-run inning in the fourth, assisted by an unearned run, to take a 4-0 lead. The Spires struggled to get anything going offensively, as Evangel got rolling in the sixth and seventh inning to make the final score 10-0.

Game Two

Much like the first game, Evangel struck first, taking an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Saint Mary had an opportunity to score as Sadie McWilliams, and Alexis McDaniel singled to get on base but unfortunately was left on base as the inning ended. After Evangel scored in the third and fifth innings, the Spires answered in the bottom of the fifth as Delaney Hess scored on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Strandlund to make the score 3-1 in favor of Evangel. The Valor responded to that with a 2-run sixth inning. The Spires could not get anything going the rest of the game, losing 5-1.

Up next

The Spires will be at home for a midweek series against Cottey College at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in Leavenworth, Kansas.
