Spires Win 6-3 Over Comets, Game Two Canceled

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team hosted Cottey College on Wednesday for a doubleheader, winning game one 6-3. Game two was canceled due to low temperatures. The Spires are now 3-2 overall this year.

Cottey College struck first in the second inning after an RBI double and an RBI single. Starter Briana Solis made quick work of the Comets line up in the top of the third, getting help from catcher Allyson Dias picked off the lead runner at third base. In the bottom half of the inning, a two-run single from Sadie McWilliams gave Saint Mary a 3-2 lead. Cottey scored one more run in the top half of the fourth but could not get any more runs across the plate after that. Saint Mary scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI double from Jessica Strandlund and a single from Megan Brinkman drove in two more runs. Solis continued to retire Cottey batters and completed the game giving the Spires a 6-3 win over the Comets. Brinkman led Saint Mary on offense, going three for four with four RBIs.

The Spires will be on the road to take on the Benedictine Ravens for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Atchison, Kansas.
