Softball Splits With Concordia

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball hosted Concordia University for a doubleheader on Saturday, resulting in a 9-0 win and a 5-3 loss. The Spires are now 5-6 overall this year.

Game One

Saint Mary got out of an early bases load jam when starter Megan Brinkman forced a slow ground ball to third for the final out of the inning. The Spires got on the board in the bottom half of the opening inning after an error by the Bulldogs catcher gave Saint Mary the 1-0 lead. A triple in the bottom of the second made the score 2-0. Brinkman gave up just one hit through the next two innings and got out of another jam in the top of the fourth inning. Another error by Concordia allowed Alexis McDaniel to cross the plate to give the Spires a 3-0 lead. Saint Mary had a big fifth inning, scoring six runs and bringing an end to game one with a score of 9-0.

Game Two

Concordia struck first in game two of the doubleheader after an RBI single in the first and an RBI double in the second made the score 2-0. The Spires could not get on the board until the bottom of the fourth when an errant throw from the Bulldogs shortstop allowed Jessica Strandlund to advance and bring Saint Mary within one run. In the bottom of the fifth, the Spires tied things when McDaniel's sacrifice fly to center field drove in Allie Cox. Both teams drove in runs off of sacrifices in the sixth inning. However, a two-run double by the Bulldogs in the top of the seventh ended up being the difference maker, as the Spires were retired to end game two by a score of 5-3. Briana Solis led Saint Mary in offensive production, going four for eight with two RBIs, and two runs on the day.
