Spires Sweep in Sunday Matchup Against William Woods

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team played a doubleheader against the William Woods Owls, winning 4-0 in the first game and 11-1 in game two. The Spire's overall record is now 7-6.

Game One

After a slow start for both teams, Saint Mary eventually got on the board first with an RBI single from Allyson Dias that drove in Tatiana Halupa, making it 1-0. In the fifth inning, Alexis McDaniel hit a home run to extend the Spire lead to 2-0. That same inning, Victoria Gutierrez doubled, bringing in two more runs to take a 4-0 lead. This gave USM all the momentum they would need, closing the game out to win 4-0. Megan Brinkman got the win in the circle, and Dias went two for three from the plate with an RBI.

Game Two

Much like the first game, both teams had slow starts. That is until the Spires exploded in the third inning with offensive production. Four different Spires drove in runs making it a 5-0 ball game. The inning was eventually capped off by a three-run home run from Natalie Bruce to take an 8-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. The Owls then got on the board after a sacrifice fly was hit to center field, but USM recaptured the momentum in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Sadie McWilliams and Gutierrez scored off of errors, Alexis McDaniel hit a sacrifice fly to left field that drove in Audrey Spellman, giving Saint Mary the 11-1 win. Briana Solis got the win on the mound, while Spellman went one for three from the plate with two RBIs.
