Spires Split With Missouri Valley College

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team hosted Missouri Valley College on Wednesday, winning game one 7-6 and losing game two 8-1. The Spires are now 15-12 overall on the season. 

Game One

Saint Mary gave up two runs in the opening inning after an RBI double and a run scored on an error. Briana Solis hit a ball to the right side of the field that let Alexis McDaniel score to cut the Viking's lead. In the third inning, a two-run home run extended the Missouri Valley lead to three runs. McDaniel was driven in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Vikings. The Spires pulled within one of Missouri Valley after Megan Brinkman hit an RBI single to left field. Saint Mary gave up another run in the top of the sixth but tied the ball game up at five runs a piece with an RBI single from Audrey Spellman and an RBI double from McDaniel. In the eighth inning, the Vikings capitalized on an error to go up 6-5. After a fielder's choice and an RBI single from Allyson Dias to end the game and give the Spires a 7-6 win. McDaniel led the Spires at the plate, going four for four, scoring four runs along with an RBI. 

Game Two

Brinkman started the second game and threw three scoreless innings for the Spires. In the top of the fourth, the Vikings got on the board with a two-run double that made the score 2-0. Dias scored the first for Saint Mary to cut Missouri Valleys in half. The Vikings went on to score six more runs throughout the next three innings to build an 8-1 lead over the Spires.

Saint Mary will travel to take on McPherson College at 1 p.m. on Saturday in McPherson, Kansas.
