Spires Split With Nationally Ranked OKWU

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team played a doubleheader against Oklahoma Wesleyan University, losing game one (2-1) and winning game two (5-3). The Spire's overall record is now 16-15 and 1-7 in the KCAC.

Game One

The first game of the doubleheader featured excellent defensive play from both teams as Saint Mary and Oklahoma Wesleyan was held scoreless through the first five and a half innings. The Eagles got on the board first with an RBI single in the bottom half of the fifth. They followed it up with another run scored in the sixth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Sadie McWilliams helped the Spires get on the board with an RBI single to right center that drove in Victoria Gutierrez. Briana Solis got on base late in the seventh, but the Spires were unable to tie things up, losing 2-1.

 

Game Two

Saint Mary was on a mission to begin game two as Alexis McDaniel hit an RBI single that scored Solis, giving the Spires the early 1-0 lead. After the defense held the Eagles scoreless in the second and third, McDaniel hit a solo home run to extend the Spire lead. Oklahoma Wesleyan then tied the game in the fourth and eventually took a 3-2 lead in the fifth, putting the pressure on the Spires. Megan Brinkman and McDaniel later came up big for Saint Mary in the fifth, each hitting an RBI single to take the lead back from the Eagles, making it a 4-3 ball game. An insurance run scored by Allie Cox in the sixth inning was all the Spires needed to win game two, 5-3. McDaniel led her team to victory, going four for four from the plate with four RBIs and two runs scored.

The Spires will play a doubleheader against the College of Saint Mary Flames at 2 p.m. on Thursday in Leavenworth, Kansas.
